Save and Improve - A Renovation Framework for Redevelopment of Urban Villages in Shenzhen

The urban villages in China are urbanized villages within the city. In recent decades the vital but problematic communities provide low-income immigrants from undeveloped regions in China affordable rooms. However more and more urban villages are demolished because of “scientific urban upgrades“ all over China. Countless underprivileged migrants who live in those urban villages face the threat of expulsion from the modern mega cities. This master thesis intends to offer an alternative long-term renovation framework to analyze the topic though different scales. It proposes the concept firstly “to save“ the urban village from destruction and then “to improve“ the vibrant and complicated community and urban fabric. It defends the right to residence of the migrants and still provides them affordable housing.
