The teaching area History of Open Space Planning covers the topics History of the Profession of Landscape Architecture, History of Garden Art and Garden Culture, as well as the Preservation of Garden Monuments. The University of Hannover has traditionally played a significant role in the teaching and research of these topics. From 1961 to 1988, Prof. Dr. Dieter Hennebo, as chair, provided significant inspiration for teaching and learning in the fields of garden history and garden monument preservation, as well as for specialized historical research in Germany. Prof. Dr. Jörg Gamer continued the teaching and research activities from April 1988 until his death in May 1993. In October 1996, Prof. Dr. Joachim Wolschke-Bulmahn was appointed the Chair of History of Open Space Planning and has since represented the teaching area of History of Open Space Planning. Since the summer semester of 2005, Dipl.-Ing. Rainer Schomann has held a teaching position for garden monument preservation.
